Tropical Ulcer

Tropical Ulcer

During the summer or monsoon, it is very normal to have itchy skin, rashes, or small boils. But did you know that a small scratch or insect bite can actually turn into a deep, painful wound called a tropical ulcer on the hands and feet? And a very special mention to diabetes patients: you are 100% at risk.

We see this all the time at Dr. Durai’s Diabetes and Foot Care Clinic, especially among diabetic patients. The worst part? Most people wait too long to get help. What starts off looking like a harmless sore can spread fast, especially in people with poor skin healing or uncontrolled sugar levels.

But here’s the good news: they are preventable with the right tropical ulcer management. And in this article, we’re sharing 7 expert tips we give to our patients to help them keep their skin healthy — even in the stickiest weather.

1. Clean and Dry Skin Is Non-Negotiable

Sweating is a constant occurrence when the weather is humid. This moisture becomes trapped in skin folds, such as under your bust, behind your knees, or between your toes, making them ideal places for bacteria and fungi to grow.

  • Use a mild soap twice a day to wash your feet.
  • Dry carefully between your toes
  • Use antifungal powder in sweaty areas

2. Never Walk Barefoot – Not Even Inside Your House

We see so many cases where people develop ulcers because they stepped on something sharp at home. If you’re diabetic, you might not even feel the pain, which delays treatment and makes the wound worse.

  • Wear soft, covered slippers at home
  • Outside, use proper diabetic footwear (we offer customized options at our clinic)

3. Don’t Scratch When It Itches!

In humid weather, rashes, fungal patches, or mosquito bites can be extremely itchy. But scratching with your nails can break the skin and open it up to infection.

  • Use an anti-itch cream (like calamine or clotrimazole)
  • Keep your nails trimmed
  • If a bump turns into a wound, don’t wait, come to us immediately

4. Check Your Feet Every Day

Especially if you have diabetes, you should make this a habit, check your feet before bed. Look for:

  • Cuts, redness, swelling
  • Fungal infections between toes
  • Cracked heels or dry patches

5. Eat to Heal

Your skin heals faster when your body gets the right nutrients. During summer, you lose a lot of minerals through sweat, so eat foods that restore your skin’s strength.

  • Add vitamin C (lemon, amla, oranges)
  • Eat enough protein (dal, eggs, paneer)
  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated

Our diet team at the clinic also offers customized diet charts for diabetic wound healing — ask us during your next visit.

6. Wear the Right Fabrics

Avoid tight clothes or synthetic materials during summer. They trap sweat and heat, increasing the risk of skin irritation and boils.

  • Wear loose, cotton clothes
  • Change socks daily
  • For patients with fungal infections, we recommend medicated socks (available at our clinic)

7. Act Fast If You See These Signs

Not every wound is serious, but in tropical weather, small problems can become big ones quickly.

  • A wound that doesn’t dry up
  • Pus or bad smell
  • Fever or skin turning red around the sore
  • Pain that gets worse daily

If you notice any of this, don’t wait for it to heal on its own. Visit our clinic immediately.
